Manchester United suffered a horror journey home after their nightmare 1-0 defeat by Chelsea.

United, who fell eight points off leaders Manchester City after losing at Stamford Bridge, were caught up in train travel chaos that affected the whole of the country on Sunday.

Numerous incidents resulted in trains being cancelled, delayed or temporarily suspended - and it scuppered United's plans of getting back home from London.

After a two-and-a-half hour delay, the squad eventually arrived back at Stockport station at 12:05am.

Only a select few members of the squad travelled back on the train on Sunday evening, with others leaving their teammates in London in order to prepare for international duty.

Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Antonio Valencia, Daley Blind, Anders Lindegaard, Eric Bailly and Scott McTominay all travelled back up north.

Manager Jose Mourinho took the opportunity to head back to his London home, which is just a stone's throw away from Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground.

Mourinho said following the defeat to Chelsea that he remains confident that United can peg City back in the Premier League title race, despite the ever-increasing gap.

The United boss said: “We are worried (about the gap).

"But there are 18 teams more worried than us because we are second.

“Eight points, in the Premier League, is not the same as eight points in the Portuguese league, La Liga, the Bundesliga.

“Eight points in the Premier League, there's still a lot to play (for).

"I hope, I feel, I think, I wish that in the busy period of late November, December, beginning of January, I think probably we are going to be at our maximum strength with Paul Pogba, Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic back, with everyone who has been missing for the last few months, so probably we can be in a high.”
