France defender Raphael Varane has agreed a new five-year contract with Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old centre-back, who moved to the Bernabeu from Lens in 2011, has helped Real win La Liga once and the Champions League three times.

A statement published on Real's official website said Varane's new deal would run until the end of June 2022.

Manchester United had been keen on signing the France international this summer to boost their Premier League squad.

Jose Mourinho tried to open the door for a potential £50million player-cash deal involving Old Trafford keeper David de Gea.

It was the second summer in succession Mourinhon who managed him at the Bernabeu, had hunted his signature - with Varane insisting Real bosses convinced him to stay in 2016.

“I preferred to discuss with the leaders and the coach to know if they had confidence in me,” Varane told L’Equipe.

“They did, so I got my head down.”

Varane will be unveiled following his new agreement on Thursday.
