Ashley Young has told Manchester United he wants to stay with them for the rest of his career.

Resurgent England international Young is on course to be a free agent at the end of this season, when his £130,000-a-week deal is up.

The Old Trafford board want to keep him and have pledged to activate a 12-month extension to his current terms, worth £6million. But the 32-year-old is hoping for a longer agreement, after turning down opportunities to move away when he was out of favour.

Versatile Young, who can play four positions, is now back in Jose Mourinho's side and made his 11th start of the campaign in Saturday’s win over Brighton — when it was his shot that deflected in off Seagulls defender Lewis Dunk for the only goal.

The ex-Watford trainee is now in line to keep his place for Tuesday night’s trip to Watford, one of his former clubs.

Young is yet to begin formal contract talks at Old Trafford about his future, but definitely wants to stay.

He enjoys a good relationship with Mourinho and is highly-regarded within the dressing room — being made captain for the Champions League win over CSKA Moscow in September.

Now playing as a wingback, in-form Young was given an England recall by Gareth Southgate earlier this month.

His substitute appearance in the friendly against Brazil at Wembley was his 31st cap, but his first game for the Three Lions in four years.

It has given the wideman a chance of being selected for the finals in Russia next summer, despite Southgate’s well-known preference for giving younger players a chance.

Young also aims to add to his silverware haul at United, which includes the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, Europa League and Community Shield, since joining from Aston Villa for £17m in 2011.
