Manchester United defender Chris Smalling was treated to a surprise birthday party by fiancée Sam Cooke earlier this week.

The England centre-back, who is currently out injured with a broken toe, turned 27 on Tuesday and was taken out for a meal by Cooke as a birthday treat.

The duo were joined by a group of friends for the celebration, as Cooke wrote on Instagram: "Birthday squad. Surprise meal for the birthday boy @smalling lovely catch up with this lot."

Earlier in the day she shared of a picture of herself alongside the former Fulham man, writing: "Happy birthday to my amazing other half, soon to be husband. I love you so much."

Smalling hasn't featured for United since they were thumped 4-0 by Chelsea in October.

Jose Mourinho appeared to question Smalling's willingness to play through the pain after he made himself unavailable for selection for United's 3-0 win at Swansea before the international break.

"There is a difference between the brave, who want to be there at any cost, and the ones for who a little pain can make a difference," Mourinho said after the match.

"If I were to speak with the many great football people of this team, they will say many times they played without being 100 per cent. For the team you have to do anything. That is my way of seeing."

However, it later emerged that Smalling had broken his toe in two places, leaving Mourinho suitably red-faced.

He is expected to remain sidelined until mid-December.
