The first World Cup he remembers was in 2010 - and now he is expected to take the next one by storm.

Frighteningly, Marcus Rashford was just 12 - making most of us feel very old - when his abiding memory was Frank Lampard crashing a shot against the crossbar as England suffered defeat to Germany in South Africa.

Rashford will be 20 by the time Russia comes around next summer when a nation’s hopes will be pinned on his shoulders to be the next Wayne Rooney or Michael Owen.

Manchester United Rashford, who finally turns 20 next month, confirmed himself as England’s next big thing with his match winning performance against Slovakia.

But it has also succeeded in ramping up the hype for Rashford. A teen sensation at Euro 2016, an emerging superstar at Old Trafford and now all eyes on him next summer.

Owen was England’s teen sensation at France 98 with his stunning solo goal against Argentina and Rooney burst on the scene at Euro 2004. Over to you, Marcus.

England boss Gareth Southgate accepts that Rashford will now be the focus of attention over the next nine months - but insists he can handle it and also the comparisons to Rooney and Owen.

Southgate said: “I am sure he would rather be compared with Rooney and Owen than not. He is obviously a different type of player. He is as mature as they were in terms of their understanding of the game and the way he picks up concepts. But yes, it is up to him now.

“He has the mental strength, he is very mature. When he first came to the U21s he didn’t know the group, he was happy to speak in meetings, he has a lot of humility, I met the mum, I met his brothers, they are a good influence.

“We must also play a part and make sure he is looked after and we have shown that with the decision we made over the summer with the Under-21s. The way he started the season with United we knew Slovakia was a game we wanted to use him in.

“He has a great platform to build from, he has a good influence at his clubs in terms of Jose to keep him grounded, we will do the same here. What has been nice on his pathway is that it is all joined up.”

Southgate believes England have been cautious with him so far - not picking him for the under-21s in the summer to give him a break - and also liaising with Ryan Giggs when he was on Louis van Gaal’s coaching staff at Manchester United. Southgate sees that grounding at Old Trafford as crucial.

But Southgate now believes that England have a rich vein of attacking talent which can serve them well next summer even if other areas of the pitch are less convincing.

Southgate said: “Up to this point he has been really well handled and we have to continue to do that. We felt the U21s would not put too much spotlight on him and I think United were grateful for that.

“But Roy (Hodgson) picked him for the seniors two months later! So that plan was out the window. Blimey, you could see the impact he had straight away.

“The great thing is that if you look at our forwards with Dele, who is only a year older, Harry is only a couple of years older we have some really exciting players coming through the Under 21s as well.

“We know we can score goals, that is encouraging, and if we get the other bits right then we know we are dangerous in any game.

“I think he can play as a centre forward, but you saw what he is capable of against Slovakia and in Malta on the other wing.

“If you have flexible forwards who can play across the front line. If you think of United’s get forward line with Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo interchanging then it is important.

“United prepare their players well, which is why they end up the way they do. To play in front of 70,000 people every week, they bring them up in a way that you know the kind of player they will be before they walk through the door.

“We have had Marcus, Jesse (Lingard), Michael Keane... so there is a certain type they develop because they are given good values.”
