Mauricio Pochettino has admitted Tottenham 's Euro stars may have taken their eyes off the ball in the title race since putting Real Madrid to the sword.

Spurs have slumped a monster 18 points off the pace behind leaders Manchester City after a wretched Premier League run of one win in six games.

Poch Spice's side have struggled since their 3-1 win against the European Cup holders at Wembley last month and the Tottenham coach shrugged: “Maybe something changed in our mind after that game.”

England midfielder Dele Alli, who has been struggling for form, will be pressed into service for Wednesday night's final Champions League group tie against Apoel Nicosia.

Pochettino said: “It's possible that we had too much confidence. Maybe, in that moment after the Real Madrid game, something happened and changed in our mind.

“Maybe, after playing at such a high level and high tempo under massive pressure, the team needs time to breathe, and to build momentum again because that situation was new for everyone, and we need to build our confidence and trust again.

“In football, the dynamic can always change and it is important to recognise why – sometimes you go up and sometimes you can struggle – that is a good period to learn.

“It will be a fantastic experience if we change that dynamic as soon as possible. Now the most important thing is to help the players to perform again in the way they did against Madrid and Dortmund, and in games like Liverpool where we were fantastic.”

Pochettino insists Tottenham's squad is still strong enough to challenge for both the title and Champions League, where they have qualified for the knockout phase as group winners.

He said: “We have shown we can cope with playing at the very top level. We have a squad good enough to fight for every competition.

“For different reasons we can argue about why we are not top of the table in the Premier League, but the squad is very good and I am happy with the players we have.

“We have to take this game seriously – we have a lot of games ahead this month and some players need to rest, but it is a good point to win and try to build some momentum.”
