Mesut Ozil has been slammed for "holding Arsenal to ransom" following his impassioned rant on Instagram in which he criticised Gunners legends.

Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley suggested the Germany international is being hypocritical in accusing the club legends, who have been criticising the team, as failing to show Arsenal "support", because he is yet to sign a new contract.

Ozil called on former Gunners heroes now working as football pundits to "behave like legends" in a near 700 word rant on his fourth anniversary at the club.

He was previously slammed by Ian Wright who, like Burley, called him out for "hiding behind Alexis Sanchez," and failing to sign a new contract with the north London.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Burley weighed in on the debate: "Here's a guy Mesut Ozil who is clearly a talent. But he does it when it suits him, not particularly in the bigger games for Arsenal.

"He's talking about ex-players and there are quite a few Arsenal ex-players, like there are Chelsea and Man United.

"They all panda to the clubs because they want to get in, they want to get their dinner and want to get wined and dined on match days.

"I'm still waiting for an invite from an ex-club.

"Here's what you've got with Mesut Ozil, he's criticising former players for criticising, saying 'get behind us and support us, oh and by the way, in the meantime I am just going to sit back and hold the club to ransom on a £300,000-a-week contract [offer]' or whatever it is.

"He's not signed has he, so he's not exactly supporting his club by not signing a contract, but they've got to get behind him whilst he makes his mind up? I think not."
