Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was given his marching orders during Manchester United's 1-0 win at Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Portuguese boss was dismissed by referee Craig Pawson in the closing stages of the match at St Mary's, where United won 1-0 thanks to Romelu Lukaku's first half strike.

The United boss was sent to the stands after encroaching onto the pitch in the dying seconds of the game, as he manically tried to get his players back into position to see off the late threat of the hosts.

After he was dismissed, Mourinho high-fived Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino before leaving the technical area.

When asked why he had been sent off after the match, Mourinho said: "I don't know, you have to ask the referee."

With Southampton pressing, Mourinho had taken off Henrikh Mkhitaryan and replaced him with Chris Smalling as United adopted a defensive approach to try and see out the game.

Mourinho was given a touchline ban and fined £58,000 for two separate offences in November last year.

He was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg during a home match with Burnley, and fined for comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to a game at Liverpool.
