Nemanja Matic has appeared to take a thinly-veiled dig at Chelsea after making his Manchester United debut.

The Serbian midfielder played 45 minutes as the Red Devils beat Sampdoria in a pre-season friendly in Dublin.

Matic left the Premier League champions for a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

And after his first outing, he hailed his new teammates and appeared to take a swipe at his ex-club in the process.

"They are amazing. I played in a few clubs in my career, but these guys are amazing," he said.

“It was strange because the team has played and had a good pre-season.

“And as you know I trained alone in London, and it was strange for me, but I tried to give my best to control the game, give the balance and I think for the first game it was good for me.

“And step by step I think I will be better and better and I hope that I will help the team to achieve something this season.”

Speaking after the clash, Jose Mourinho lavished praise on his newest recruit.

“He needs time but [his] experience, intelligence, a genius in the way he thinks - he thinks football,” Mourinho said.

“We will help him to be ready sooner rather than later.”
