Paul Scholes says that Jose Mourinho has failed to invest wisely at Manchester United.

Under-pressure Mourinho has claimed that his side cannot compete with the spending of local rivals Manchester City - despite buying the two most expensive players in Premier League history himself over the past two summers.

After the goalless draw with Southampton on Saturday, United could find themselves 17 points behind City heading into 2018.

United legend Scholes insists that Mourinho has probably had enough backing to match City's transfer spend - and shouldn't be using transfer market activity as an excuse.

"I think whatever money he wants is available," Scholes told BT Sport ahead of the Southampton game.

"The problem that he has had is spending it wisely.

"You look at the position they are in, 15 points behind City, and he has been complaining about City been doing, but it's the last thing you want to be doing as a manager.

"Whatever City have done, they are 15 points clear and they have done it very well."

Co-pundit Martin Keown agreed with Scholes, claiming that United are significantly under-performing for their level of investment.

He said: "It is an incredible amount of money that they are spending and he obviously wants to dip in again into the pockets.

"He will be putting pressure on the owners and the board to do that."
