Romelu Lukaku hit the headlines after Manchester United's Champions League win over Benfica after he consoled the hosts' goalkeeper, but that didn't stop former United star Paul Scholes having a cheeky dig at him.

Lukaku was seen putting an arm around 18-year-old home keeper Mile Svilar after he inadvertently carried a Marcus Rashford free-kick over his own goalline for the game's solitary goal.

But after United's 1-0 win, Scholes couldn't resist a wry comment about Lukaku's recent form.

Following on from the Belgian forward's anonymous performance in the goalless draw with Liverpool last weekend - for which he was criticised by Scholes' former teammate Gary Neville - he struggled again in Lisbon.

And after seeing the footage of Lukaku consoling his compatriot, BT Sport pundit Scholes said.

"That’s probably the closest Lukaku got to him all night to be fair.

"Lukaku is a nice lad, he’s probably just given him some encouragement. Hopefully he can bounce back."

Fellow pundit Steven Gerrard was critical of Benfica manager Rui Vitoria for even picking Svilar, saying: "The mistakes will overshadow all the good bits he did out there. Everyone will be talking about this mistake but it’s about the manager.

"The manager has stitched him up when he’s not ready for Champions League football."
