Philippe Coutinho will play no part in Liverpool's New Year's Day fixture with Burnley after suffering a thigh injury.

The Brazilian failed to travel to Turf Moor with the rest of his Reds teammates on Monday, and remained in Liverpool alongside the injured Mohammed Salah.

The Egyptian, who has been in red-hot form since his £35million move from Roma in the summer, is expected to be out for the next two weeks with a knee injury.

Coutinho, on the other hand, was expected to feature for the Reds on Monday, but is believed to have suffered a thigh problem ahead of the match. It is not currently clear how serious the injury is.

The Brazilian was on Barcelona's radar throughout the summer, and was the subject of three huge bids.

Coutinho even handed in a transfer request in a bid to push through the move himself, but the Anfield club dug their heels in.

Barcelona are expected to come back in for the midfielder now that the January transfer window has opened.

Coutinho's exclusion from the first-team squad comes just days after Nike 'confirmed' his moved to the Catalan giants.

An advertisement for the Barca shop proclaimed Coutinho was "ready to light up Camp Nou" and called him "the Magician". The ad has since been taken down.
