Among Liverpool fans it was basically the sound of the summer, in between the clicking open of webpages with the latest transfer gossip.

Philippe Coutinho was, they were told, being targeted by Barcelona as the replacement for Neymar. Except he doesn't actually play like Neymar, he hasn't for some time, and fans were at pains to point that out to whoever would listen.

Jurgen Klopp used him in a deeper midfield role towards the back end of last season to great success, as the Reds managed to string together enough positive results to haul themselves into a top four finish at the expense of Arsenal.

But after starting the weekend draw with Burnley in midfield, he was back in a a Neymar-ish position on the left of the attack in Tuesday's clash with Leicester in the Carabao Cup.

And he quickly showed Liverpool what they had been missing.

In a scintillating 45 minute cameo at the King Power Stadium, Coutinho hinted at the form he often showed last season, and which would have persuaded Barcelona to try so hard to secure his signature this summer.

His long term position in the Liverpool team is still considered to be in midfield, but with Sadio Mane still suspended when the Reds go back to Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday, his display should have convinced Klopp to start him there again.

As early as the 10th minute he was seen weaving his way through the home defence at will, with one fine effort well saved by home keeper Ben Hamer.

Throughout the half, he was a focal point for Liverpool's attacks, orchestrating them and mesmerising the home defenders.

All that was missing was a goal, which almost arrived when more exquisite play put Dominic Solanke in just before half-time.

The young forward lifted his effort over the top, but a Mohamed Salah or a Roberto Firmino might have scored.

That's what Klopp will hope for anyway, as he bids to get Liverpool's Premier League season back on track back in Leicester on Saturday, when Coutinho will be crucial.
