Steven Gerrard has backed Jurgen Klopp to lead his beloved Liverpool into a title challenge in this season's Premier League.

Talking on BT Sport ahead of the Community Shield, the Anfield legend was asked to predict his top four for 2017/18. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Gerrard is confident his former side will make it - even if he feels they won't win the title.

Gerrard has Liverpool finishing second, behind Manchester City.

However, that does mean he believes The Reds will finish above their perennial rivals Manchester United - despite doubts over Jurgen Klopp's success in the transfer window thus far.

"Adam Lallana's injury is a huge blow," says Gerrard, "because he was a player in great form and confidence.

"But Salah is coming in, Mane back fit and hopefully Coutinho will stay.

"Liverpool look really dangerous on the counter. If they can learn how to break teams down at home and defend a bit better, I think they are a force.

As for the concerns about a lack of signings, Gerrard is confident Klopp may still have business to do.

"There is still time, three weeks to go."

"Last year, against the top six they were excellent and had a very good record.

"In pre-season, they have looked very strong and with three weeks to go in the window, I wouldn't be surprised if Jurgen has got a couple of cards up his sleeve.

"He might bring a couple of big signings in."
