Harry Kane admits it is impossible to avoid the goal-scoring exploits of superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on social media.

But rather than be daunted by the frightening numbers repeatedly posted by the La Liga duo Kane is being spurred on by them in his own bid to be one of the world’s best players.

Kane, 24 , has elevated himself to a level where he is now a more than worthy rival to the game’s deadliest marksmen.

And the Tottenham talisman doesn’t have to try too hard to find the figures which support his claims.

After his brace against West Ham on Saturday took his September tally to eight in six games for club and country, social media was swamped with stats showing how Kane stacks up against the very best in Ronaldo and Messi.

Spurs’ Champions League group draw has handed Kane the chance to try to out-score Ronaldo over 180 minutes in a mouth-watering showdown, with the sides meeting at the Bernabeu next month and then Wembley in November.

Before that double header, APOEL Nicosia are in Kane’s sights on Tuesday, but Ronaldo and Messi are never far from his thoughts.

Asked before the trip to Cyprus if he keeps an eye on their records, he said: “With social media these days, it’s difficult to stay away from it. Everyone is tweeting this thing or that thing and you see it.

“Obviously, I want to be one of the best players in the world, so people put it up and I see I am close to those players, and it is a great incentive to get closer and go to the next step. I use it, yes.

“I want to be one of the best in the world and to do that you have to stay up with the best and I want to score goals and maintain my form, and that’s what it is about, staying consistent at the top level.”

Kane’s goalless August is now a distant memory.

After his stunning return to form he believes he is now “probably in the best shape of my life” and without doubt Spurs’s man-of-the-moment.

Teammate Ben Davies joked: “None of us can do an interview at the moment without being asked about Harry. We are being asked questions about him that we don’t know what else to say. All the boys appreciate him. He is just incredible.

“He needs just one chance or even half chance to produce a bit of magic and score.

“As a defender it is brilliant when you have a striker like that in your team. It means you go into a game knowing if you keep a clean sheet you are more than likely to come away with the three points.”
