Wayne Rooney has been released on bail following his arrest in the early hours of Friday morning.

England's all-time record scorer was stopped by police near his home in Cheshire, in Wilmslow, driving a black Volkswagen Beetle at approximately 2am.

Mirror Sport exclusively revealed Rooney had been arrested, before Cheshire police confirmed he will appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on September 18. - one day after his first return to former club Manchester United as a visiting player.

Rooney was picked up by agent Paul Stretford from the Middlewich Custody Suite, Cheshire, in a black Range Rover on Friday, having spent the night in custody.

Rooney who announced his international retirement last week after 53 goals for his country in 119 appearances, spent the evening at a bar in Alderley Edge, believed to be The Bubble Room.

A fellow customer posted a picture of himself with the 31-year-old at the venue on social media at 10pm.

The striker had earlier been seen at Italian restaurant Piccolino at about 4pm, after training with Everton earlier in the day.

Later he was at the trendy Alderley Edge bar nearby with pals, one of whom was believed to be ex-United teammate Wes Brown as well as the brother of Phil Bardsley. The trio sang and danced to local band Funky Treacle, who were playing Oasis covers.

Rooney lives five miles away in a £6million home in Prestbury, where he, wife Coleen and his children have been for the last 12 years.

Rooney re-joined his boyhood club Everton in the summer, and scored in each of his opening two Premier League games following his return from United.

Everton's next match is against Tottenham, at Goodison Park, on September 9.
