Wayne Rooney enjoyed a “sweet moment” as he was welcomed into the Premier League 200 club but it's only other member, Alan Shearer.

Shearer said he'd been "lonely" as the only other player to have reached the milestone as he congratulated the Everton striker.

Rooney is looking beyond goal records though - he revealed he has still not given up on England.

Rooney admitted he enjoyed scoring against Manchester United’s great rivals and plans to speak to Gareth Southgate, who was at Monday night's game, before he names his next England squad on Thursday.

Everton striker Rooney, 31, has not been in the last two England squads but scored his landmark goal against ten-man Manchester City who had Kyle Walker sent off for two yellow cards in the space of three first half minutes.

Rooney said: "It was nice. To do it today in such an important game for us, with tough games coming up, it was a sweet moment and I am sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed it as well.

"I am focusing on Everton. I am sure I will speak to England manager Gareth Southgate over the next few days and we will see what happens.”

Rooney, who covered 11km which was more than any other Everton player, poked fun at his critics and added: “It is not bad for someone who is not fit anymore and can't get about the pitch! I have always put a shift in for the team and tonight is no different.

"We can certainly improve. It is early days obviously. We have made a lot of signings this summer. We are ambitious, we try to move forward. Time will tell, we aim to get better hopefully over the next year or two and hopefully that brings success.

"Everton have shown their ambition. We are trying to close that gap on the top teams.”

Everton boss Ronald Koeman said: "I am not surprised about Wayne Rooney. I know how eager he was to come back to Everton. We are really happy that he is back.”

City boss Pep Guardiola saw Raheem Sterling salvage a late point for his team but was clearly annoyed with referee Robert Madley who also sent off Morgan Schneiderlin in the closing stages.

Guardiola said: “I don't want to talk about the referee. It was so clear.

“He made a good goal. He was good. prefer to play in the middle than why. all the players amazing in the second half. We never give up. It’s the spirit of Mancunians.”
