Wayne Rooney was almost forced to regret telling son Kai about his move from Manchester United to Everton.

Striker Rooney let slip to his seven-year-old Toffees mad son that he was in talks to return to Goodison Park this summer.

But he had yet to agree a deal with his boyhood club before he told Kai - who went to school and spread the rumour around his pals in the playground.

Rooney eventually clinched a two-year contract with Ronald Koeman's side after being allowed to leave United on a free.

The move was an emotional one for Rooney - who is United and England's all-time record goalscorer - as he grew up watching his beloved Everton from Goodison Park before breaking through as a teenage wonderkid.

Since his return, the 31-year-old has netted twice in three Premier League appearances but is still relieved Kai didn't ruin the switch.

“It’s only really my eldest, Kai, who understands and he was made up," Rooney told TalkSport. "He has actually got season tickets at Everton, so he has been going to games anyway.

“He was delighted. I told him a few days before I should have really and he was telling his schoolmates just as it was getting done but not quite done.

“But he is delighted and it is good for them to go to Goodison. I went as a kid and it’s good for them to do that and watch me play.”
