Wayne Rooney returned to Premier League action with Everton on Saturday - and didn't waste any time in breaking records on his Goodison Park return.

England's record goalscorer netted with a terrific header in the Toffees opening day clash with Stoke City.

And that conversion, more than 13 years on from his last appearance for his boyhood club, reports the Liverpool Echo.

It was Rooney's first Premier League appearance as an Everton player since May 2004 - and his goal against the Potters saw him set a remarkable new record in the top flight.

Rooney's header saw him set a new record of the longest gap between goals for the same club - a run which stretched to a whopping 4869 days.

Prior to the Stoke goal, Rooney's previous Everton strike was in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road back on April 13 2004, and you would have to go back a month earlier for the 31-year-old's last goal at Goodison Park as a Blues player.

His last Goodison goal came in a 1-0 win over Portsmouth on March 13 2004.

The 13 years in between goals have seen Rooney win five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the Champions League and the 2016 FA Cup, as well becoming Manchester United and England's all-time top scorers in the process.
