Wayne Rooney couldn't resist winding up Manchester City fans by sprinting towards the home supporters after scoring the opener for Everton at the Etihad this evening.

The ex-Manchester United star hit the back of the net in the first half of the Premier League clash, as the Citizens struggled against their organised visitors.

The 31-year-old wheeled away towards City fans and cupped his ears - angering more than a few of them - before celebrating with his other teammates.

For some supporters, it was an all too familiar scene, as some eagle-eyed Twitter users pointed out after the 1-1 draw.

Pictures shared on social media show a handful on City season ticket holders jeering and swearing at Rooney as he marauded in front of them.

The exact same fans were also seen in the same spots sticking two fingers up to the striker when he scored against them for United back in December 2012.

Twitter user and Manchester United Adam shared the snaps and said: "4 years later. Wayne Rooney still pissing these two City fans off #mufc"

Liverpool fan Rob McEvoy spotted another couple of irate fans, adding: "These two as well!"

User James Shepherd also spotted another fan who seemed as unimpressed as he had been back in 2013.

Rooney himself later took to Twitter to joke about his reception.

Sharing a snap of the crowd giving his stick, he wrote: "Always nice to see a few familiar faces" with a crying laughing face and a waving emoji."

Speaking about his goal after the game on Sky Sports, Rooney was asked to explain what it's like scoring against Man City, and he couldn't help but crack a joke.

"What again!?" asked Rooney, replying to Gary Neville while laughing. "Of course it was nice obviously, with me at Manchester United scoring a few times here.

"To do it today in such an important game for us, early on in the season we've got tough games coming up, it was a sweet moment and I'm sure the red half of Manchester would have enjoyed that on."

Rooney's goal was his 200th in the Premier League, but it wasn't quite enough for Everton to win the game.

Raheem Sterling grabbed a late equaliser for the Citizens, who were reduced to ten men when Kyle Walker was given his marching orders, to spare Pep Guardiola's blushes.
