Anthony Martial needs to become more aware of his surroundings if he is to cement a place in Manchester United's starting XI.

That's according to Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, who analysed the France international's performance following the Red Devils' 1-0 win over Tottenham.

Martial was brought on as a sub in the 70th minute of the Premier League clash at Old Trafford, with the game still deadlocked.

And within 10 minutes the 21-year-old had made all the difference, slotting past Hugo Lloris after latching onto a long ball played up the pitch by David De Gea and headed on by Romelu Lukaku.

The goal was his fourth from the bench this season - a Premier League high - raising the question: 'Should Martial start for Man United over Marcus Rashford?'

Speaking on Sky Sports, Graeme Souness voiced his opinion.

"Until you work with a player - we make comments on what we see out there for 90 minutes, or 20 minutes, whenever he comes on," said the Scot.

"Looking at him he's full of quality, he's got great quality. He wrong foots people at the drop of a shoulder, he's got great, quick feet.

"What he doesn't show me is that he is aware of all of his surroundings all of the time, or if he is involved in the game, even when the ball is at the other side of the pitch. He seems to only play when the ball comes into his territory.

"There's no doubting his qualities, and right now that might be his life at Man United, coming on as a sub, and learning the game, and learning every day in training."
