Jesse Lingard was at it again for Manchester United on New Year's Day.

The in-form midfielder scored his seventh goal in his last nine Premier League appearances as United saw off Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park - the latest in an increasingly lengthening line of fine performances from the England international.

Lingard has defied plenty of his critics this season by becoming a key player for Jose Mourinho , with many having already written off the Old Trafford career of a player who was sent on loan to Leicester, Birmingham, Brighton and Derby in his early United seasons.

In his early career, United sent him out on four loan spells - including this one at Brighton

But it seems as though there was always one man who never doubted that Lingard would make it as a United player eventually - a man who knows exactly what it takes to be one.

Sir Alex Ferguson was in the final years of his remarkable United reign when he commented on Lingard in 2012, and his words - documented here by our friends at the Manchester Evening News - seem incredibly prophetic now.

“Jesse Lingard is going to be some player,” said Ferguson when Lingard was still a teenager, shortly before his first loan move away from the club at Leicester.

“He is 19, came through our youth system and is built like Jean Tigana was for France.

“But he never got into the limelight there until he was about 24, and I think that will be the same with Lingard.

“He will become a player when he’s 22 or so. As an attacking midfielder he has got a really good talent. I think he will be a player we have high hopes for, definitely.”

Lingard made his Premier League debut for United shortly before turning 22, but having just turned 25 on December 15 last year, it is that comparison with former France midfielder Jean Tigana and his career that has proven most accurate.

Obviously Ferguson knew all along.
