Antonio Conte insists Chelsea “tried to do its best” in the summer transfer window.

But Conte admitted only time will tell if he has a squad strong enough to cope with the demands of the season.

The champions signed six players but still endured plenty of frustration as they missed out on a number of targets.

This continued right up until deadline day when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked Liverpool over Chelsea, another long-term target Fernando Llorente joined Tottenham and Ross Barkley turned down a move to the Blues at the last-minute after a fee was agreed with Everton.

But Conte claimed the Blues hierarchy could not have done much more to bring him the new players.

The Chelsea boss said: “I think the club tried to do its best in the transfer market and sometimes you are able to buy and sometimes you are not able to buy for many reasons but the club tried to do it's best in the transfer market.”

"We have to wait at the end of the season and we will see and I can reply very well to this question [about if the squad is strong enough].

“Now it is very difficult. Now the window is closed it is time to continue to work and work with these players and I am very happy to work with the players we have.

“It is time to be focused on the present. The window is closed and that is in the past.”

Conte also denied he was not allowed to speak to Barkley by the club or had his phone switched off as the England midfielder's proposed switch from Everton unravelled.

He was able to add £35m midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who has yet to play this season due to injury, from Leicester and £23m wing back Davide Zappacosta to his squad on deadline day.

Both will be in his squad to face Drinkwater's former side Leicester tomorrow.

Conte said: “It is normal when there is the transfer window and there is the possibility for you to go to another team it is not simple.

“But he (Drinkwater) is a good buy for us and is working very well and this week he improved a lot his physical condition and he is in the squad for Leicester game but I don't know when he will be ready to play.

“Davide played a game against Israel with the national team and it shows he is in good physical condition.

“Also he worked with me with the national team. He knows very well what is my style of football and idea and for him it is more simple to adapt to our style of football.

“I think he is suited to Premier League football. We will see this in the next games.”
