Arsene Wenger insists he is "confident" that Mesut Ozil will sign a contract extension at Arsenal despite speculation of a move away.

The German scored a stunning volley in the 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday but is just weeks away from being able to agree a pre-contract with a foreign club to move on a free transfer next summer.

But Wenger is not concerned and believes Ozil will remain at the Emirates beyond this season.

"I am confident, yes," Wenger replied when quizzed on whether Ozil will sign a contract extension. "But what does that mean? I don’t."know."

Wenger also dismissed the need for more goals from the former Real Madrid star, claiming that players' form in front of goal is just cyclical.

"You would think that today you are always very quickly under pressure when you are a football player when you do not score one or two games," Wenger added. "Everybody says ‘why does that happen?’

"You look historically, it happens every year. The finishing is a bit cyclical. Sometimes you score there or four.

"Sometimes, like today, we had six or seven chances and scored only one. It’s part of it and to live with it, I know people are not happy with it, it’s part of the game."
