Wenger hails Gunners after Liverpool thumping

Arsene Wenger hailed his side's performance in the 4-1 victory over Liverpool, as the Gunners chalked up a seventh consecutive Premier League win.

Goals from Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud sealed the deal, with a Jordan Henderson penalty the only consolation for Liverpool, who also went down to 10 men in the last 10 minutes when Emre Can saw red.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Wenger thought the first half was an even affair until Bellerin's opener on 36 minutes, which was quickly followed by wonder strikes from Ozil and Sanchez.

Wenger told BT Sport: "It was a first half of quality from both sides. We had a strong start with big intensity, but they came back into the game and had a good chance before we scored. We were focused and clinical.

"If you look at today and the number of goals we scored, it's not a coincidence.

"The second half was more flat, they had chances on the break but we dominated possession.

"The plan was not to let them play. As soon as we did we were under pressure, because they are good going forward.

"Today was a great day. It was a very important game."

PSG man Cabaye back on Arsenal's hit list

Yohan Cabaye is back on the radar at Arsenal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was close to signing the 29-year-old Frenchman fromNewcastle at the start of last season but failed in a £10million bid.

Cabaye moved to Paris Saint-Germain for £15.5million in January last year. But he has failed to establish a regular first-team place and intends to talk about his future with PSG at the end of the season.

He wants to play more first-team football ahead of the European Championship in France next summer.

That will leave the door open for Wenger – and he could get his man with another £10million bid.

Mertesacker hails tougher mentality

Per Mertesacker accused the Arsenal team of going soft on each and said they needed to have a "proper argument" to sort out their problems.

The Gunners are currently the form team in the Premier League table and look the most likely team to put in an unlikely challenge on Chelsea for the title.

But the recent form is completely different to the Arsenal of last season - and the start of this campaign - who struggled to compete with other teams in the top four.

And German defender Mertesacker believes that the Gunners were going too soft and feels a bit of ferocity is what was needed in the changing rooms to change their fortunes.

Speaking to the Independent, he said: "You need that arguing culture. We lost that at times. It gets personal, and someone gets upset too quickly, but you have to face the truth and have a proper argument. That was normal 10 years ago and it has slightly changed."

Arsenal are set to trump London rivals Tottenham in their pursuit of Cologne defender Kevin Wimmer.

The 22-year-old looked poised to move to White Hart Lane for a fee of £5m in the summer but Arsene Wenger has other ideas, according to the Daily Star.

Despite recruiting Gabriel Paulista in the January transfer window, Gunners chief Wenger is keen on bolstering his defence further.

Frenchman Wimmer has been given assurances by Per Mertesacker that he would fit in well at the Emirates.
