Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland: 5 things we learned

Sunderland secured their Premier League status for another season with an extremely hard-fought goalless draw at the Emirates.

Although goals were on short supply, chances were not, as the home side wracked up no less than 28 shots at goal, but ended up drawing another blank at home.

The draw means the Gunners are three points ahead of Manchester United and will secure third place in the Premier League by avoiding a heavy defeat against West Brom on Sunday.

But what did we learn from a busy goalless draw at the Emirates? Find out here.

Wenger worried about Arsenal burnout

Arsene Wenger last night admitted he is worried about burnout ahead of the FA Cup final.

The Gunners boss saw his players fire blanks as they failed to score for the third home game running and they look as if they are stumbling their way into third place.

They should have enough already because of their superior goal difference over Manchester United but can guarantee automatic Champions League qualification with a point against West Brom on Sunday.

But the deeper fear for Wenger is that his players appear to have run out of gas after a gruelling season and yet they still have the FA Cup final against Aston Villa on Saturday week.

Wenger said: “It’s a bit worrying for the cup final. But there’s still nearly two weeks to go. I don’t know if I will rest some players on Sunday but it’s possible.

“We lack a bit of sharpness at the moment, the way we prepare our chances and our finishing as well."

Wenger defends FFP

Arsene Wenger has come out in defence of Financial Fair Play - saying it is the most "logical" way to run a football club.

The Arsenal manager was reacting to the news that compatriot and UEFA president Michel Platini is ready to relax the rules following pressure from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Opponents of FFP have claimed that the regulations restrict the growth of both clubs and the sport, but Wenger argued that it seemed to him the most appropriate model to follow.

"I have no problem to lose the battle," said Wenger. "I just did fight for what looks to me to be logical: that any business, to have a continuity, should live with the resources that it creates. It doesn't look like anything absolutely unbelievable.

"If you open any shop tomorrow, you do not expect your neighbour to come in say 'I help you and give you some money, even if it doesn't work'."

Arsenal concede highest percentage of headed goals

Arsenal are not a side known for their aerial dominance.

Arsene Wenger will tell you that's a good thing. He'll tell you that in attacking terms, his team play such beautiful stuff, they don't need to worry about peasant-like tactics like heading the ball.

He might also point out that defensively, only Chelsea and Southampton have conceded fewer goals than his boys this season.

Even so, the fact more than a THIRD of the goals Arsenal have conceded have been headers should probably ring a few alarm bells. No other side in the ENTIRE Premier League have a percentage as bad as The Gunners'.

Goals conceded as headers: HIGHEST

34 %

Arsenal

32 %

Burnley

30 %

Stoke City

For the record, 34% is a BIG number. For the majority of teams, the number is under 20%. In some cases, it's as low as 10%.
