Oxlade-Chamberlian doubt for Liverpool game

Arsene Wenger fears his injury crisis has deepened even further, after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became the latest victim.

Oxlade-Chamberlain limped out of Saturday's win over Newcastle with a recurrence of a groin problem that troubled him after the Galatasaray game in midweek.

The Arsenal and England midfielder was left devastated and will have an injection to try to ease the problem in the hope it settles down.

The Gunners have their fingers crossed that the 21-year-old will be fit to face to face Liverpool next Sunday but face an anxious wait until the full extent of the injury is discovered on Monday.

Gunners prepare for Champions League draw

Arsenal bossArsene Wengerhopes his side are drawn against his former club Monaco.

The Gunners have been unlucky at this stage in the past two seasons, drawing – and losing to – Bayern Munich on both occasions. Unsurprisingly, their manager is keen to avoid a hat-trick.

“We don’t want Bayern Munich and I’m sure they don’t want us,” said Wenger. “We’ve never had an easy ride. I don’t think many teams want Madrid.

“I’m not against drawing Monaco at all because it would be a visit to my first home there. Of course I would love to go there.

"I’ve got great memories of Monaco because they gave me a chance when I was a very young manager. We played many Champions League games there as well.

“When I arrived there, they had never passed the first round in the European Cup so we have good memories. It is a fantastic place. That would be good.”

Giroud is a seventies throwback

Arsene Wenger reckons Giroud’s aerial ability is a throwback to the 1970s when it was all flares rather than flair.

The Frenchman is an old-fashioned centre-forward whose return from injury has coincided with Arsenal’s improved form.

“He is like an English centre-forward. His first goal he scored was a typical 1970s goal. You saw those headers in the Seventies and Eighties. You love it because you see it less now,” said Wenger.

“It’s not just him as a player, but something in his mentality. He’s such a positive guy. Even when he misses something, people forgive him. It’s difficult to explain, but he has a positive mental impact as well as a physical impact."
