Arsenal director Lord Harris admits he is "very pleased" Arsenal didn't sign Raheem Sterling - because of how he treated Liverpool.

The England star completed his £49m switch to Manchester City earlier this month as one of the summer's most protracted and bitter sagas came to a close.

Sterling alerted football's heavyweights when he told Liverpool he would not be signing a new deal before failing to turn up to pre-season training, citing illness.

He then looked set to refuse to join Liverpool's tour of Asia and Australia before City lodged their bid and the deal was completed.

Arsenal had been earmarked as a possible destination for Sterling, but Harris is glad a bid failed to materialise.

"Sterling is a very, very good player but I'm very pleased Arsenal didn't sign him," he told the Mail.

"He's got a lot to learn. They were looking at him and the way he treated Liverpool wasn't good. Arsene does a lot of work on the players before they get to us and he doesn't take any nonsense."

Earlier this month boss Arsene Wenger admitted he was never in for the 20-year-old, despite reports linking him with the Emirates.

"It is a good buy for Man City. It looked a done deal for a while because Sterling was adamant he wanted the move,” said Wenger.

"It is an expensive one but they can afford it. We never considered it because he plays in an area where we have plenty of players."

Harris also admitted Arsenal have £200m in the bank to spend should Arsene Wenger want to splash the cash - insisting he could get any player in the world bar Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
