Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Hull defender Josh Tymon, according to reports.

The 17-year-old made his Premier League debut for the Tigers against Sunderland at the weekend but is yet to sign a professional contract at the club.

He is currently on a scholarship deal at the KCOM Stadium and ESPN FC say Arsenal are keen on acquiring his services.

The Hull Daily Mail , however, say contract talks are ongoing between Hull and Tymon, and that the teenager is keen on furthering his development in Humberside.

Wenger urges Gunners to prove European credentials

Arsene Wenger insists this season’s Champions League is wide open - and has challenged his players to go out and prove they are genuine contenders to lift the trophy next June, writes John Cross.

Manager Wenger believes English clubs have bridged the gap created by European superpowers such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich over recent seasons, and says this is Arsenal's best chance in years to win the competition.

The Gunners have not reached even the Champions League's quarter-finals since 2010, but beating Wednesday's visitors Paris Saint-Germain would help them top Group A and offer a potentially easier last-16 draw.

Incredibly, not a single Premier League team has made it the quarter-finals in two of the past four years, and Arsenal have become also-rans since reaching the final in 2006.

“I feel that (English clubs are closer), yes,” said Wenger.

“Look at Man City winning against Barcelona. We have an opportunity to show it against Paris Saint-Germain.

“I must say that I watched [European Cup holders] Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid on Saturday and I was impressed by them. They looked, at the moment, to be the most dangerous side.

"But I don’t think Real, Barcelona or Bayern are as far away. I think we are ready to compete. Look, I am after the Premier League [title too], believe me. It is difficult as well, so let’s not choose.”

Wenger wants to give Sanchez mid-season break

Arsene Wenger furiously defended his decision to pick Alexis Sanchez - and then admitted he wants to give him a mid-season break, writes John Cross.

Sanchez wore a heavy strapping at Manchester United on Saturday and Wenger is ready to risk him again on Wednesday night, despite him getting a hamstring injury while on international duty.

Arsenal boss Wenger admitted he wants to give Sanchez an extended rest at some point in the next few weeks to avoid him suffering burn out and picking up another injury.

But Wenger was clearly riled by any suggestion that he forced Sanchez to play at Old Trafford and also denied having ever asked a player to play with injections.

Wenger said: “He had a bit of tightness in his hamstring, but he was checked before the game (on Saturday). I follow the instructions of the medical staff and the player.

“After I make a decision. If they declare him capable of playing, and the player does as well... I have never forced anyone to play in my life. I've never demanded anyone should be injected to play.

“If a player is 100 per cent, I make a decision. But the suggestions I have forced him to play are wrong, completely wrong.

“I had the luxury to give (Mesut) Ozil a break because Germany didn't pick him. Sanchez was not overloaded with games before United, either, as he didn't play (for Chile) in Colombia.”

Wenger: Bellerin deal proves we're not a selling club

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed Hector Bellerin's new deal signals new intent for the Gunners and that they are no longer a selling club, writes Jack Rathborn.

Bellerin put put to paper on a new six-and-a-half year deal, thought to be worth £100,000-per-week, to allow Arsenal to fend off interest from Manchester City and Barcelona.

The French boss was speaking ahead of the Champions League match with PSG and could not hide his delight at securing the 21-year-old's future to the Emirates.

“When you give youngsters a chance to play in the first team, you want them to commit to the club," Wenger said.

“It sends out the message that the media will have to find a different name for someone that wants to leave.”

Cazorla return date uncertain

Santi Cazorla is nowhere near a return to first-team action, manager Arsene Wenger has revealed, writes Jake Murtagh.

The Arsenal was recently sent to Spain to see a specialist for the Achilles injury that has so far sidelined him for a month.

However, Wenger admits Cazorla is not close to featuring for the Gunners as he struggles to shake off the problem.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday night's Champions League clash with PSG, the Frenchman said: “At the moment I’ve given up on that.

“I don’t know how far he is. He looks to me that he’s making progress, but as long as the player is not in full-time training you can’t set targets.

“It’s not a big injury, it’s not one that will harm his future, it’s an inflammation at the back of his Achilles. And with inflammation it’s always hard to tell.

“My gut feelings is two weeks, but after two weeks it takes another two weeks of training to get back to full fitness.”
