Ander Herrera is ready to fight for his place at Manchester United after his first start of the season in the 2-2 draw with Stoke.

A star for Jose Mourinho last season, Herrera's fallen behind Nemanja Matic in the pecking order after his arrival from Chelsea.

The reigning player of the year has just this season left on his contract and looks set for life on the bench but the Express reports that he's negotiating for an extension.

Mourinho explains why Nemanja Matic is one of "better guys in my career"

Jose Mourinho has revealed the exact moment he realised Nemanja Matic was 'one of my guys' - the day he humiliated him during a Chelsea match.

Matic was a key part of Mourinho's Chelsea side which won the 2014/15 Premier League. Now, after a shock £40million this summer, the Serbian midfielder looks set to be a vital part of Mourinho's Manchester United too.

In a new interview with the Sunday Times, the Portuguese manager explains why he is such a huge fan of Matic, commenting: "I cannot say I have had better guys in my career."

He goes on to describe how it was Matic's reaction to one of Mourinho's harshest calls which made him understand the strength of his character.

Mark Hughes hits back at Jose Mourinho as bitter aftermath to Stoke draw

Mark Hughes has hit back at Jose Mourinho in his running battle with the Manchester United boss for branding Stoke long ball.

Hughes pushed Mourinho during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at the bet365 Stadium, allegedly telling him to “f*** off”, and dismissed his jibe that the Potters are direct as “lazy”.

Mourinho snubbed shaking Hughes’ hand at the end before claiming this was a “game for Fellaini” because Stoke hit so many aerial balls.

The Stoke boss rebuffed Mourinho’s insult, saying: “That’s just an easy swipe at us really.

“You could argue United played more long balls, and why wouldn’t they? They’ve got power and pace and if they can get those players ahead of the ball with good accuracy, they’ve got pace and power to burn.

Man United boss Jose Mourinho's criticism of Antonio Conte's Chelsea falls apart when you look at the facts

Jose Mourinho had a run-in with Stoke boss Mark Hughes on the sideline and refused to shake his hand after Man United's 2-2 draw.

The former Man United striker isn't the only one in the Red Devils boss's sights - comments about Chelsea and the man who replaced him, Antonio Conte, have left a bitter taste for fans who want to remember his reign at Stamford Bridge as one well worth celebrating.

And as Football.London's Kevin Beirne writes, falling short in one very important area.

---------------

Jose Mourinho is no stranger to controversy, in fact it would be pretty easy to argue that he actively courts it.

During his two spells at Stamford Bridge, the Portuguese won over the west London faithful with his unprecedented trophy haul and his win-at-all-costs mentality - but since leaving for a second time a year and a half ago, Mourinho has gone about dismantling that legacy.

While it would take a revelation of catastrophic proportions to undo his achievements at the Bridge, Mourinho appears to be doing all he can to destroy whatever goodwill he has left at Chelsea.
