Manchester United have identified Celtic's Kieran Tierney as an alternative to first-choice left-back target Danny Rose .

United are weighing up a January move for Rose, but have balked at Tottenham's £50million valuation of the England international.

Celtic skipper Tierney, who has been tracked by United for the last two seasons, has emerged as a cheaper alternative if a move for Rose proves impossible.

Tierney, 20, who signed a six-year contract with Celtic in October, would cost around £25m and has the added bonus of also being able to play at right-back.

Despite Luke Shaw's re-emergence in recent weeks, United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to add a recognised left-back to his squad, with Rose the main target.

Ashley Young and Daley Blind have also played at left-back for United this season, but Mourinho wants to bring in a specialist who can make the position his own.

Although Shaw, Young and Blind have all had their contracts extended to 2019 by United, that was done chiefly to protect their market value.

Young's versatility at being able to play left and right full-back and on the wing means he is likely to stay, but the futures of Shaw and Blind are less certain.
