Manchester United have enquired about the availability of Anderlecht midfielder Leander Dendoncker, according to sources close to the player.

The 22-year-old landed on Jose Mourinho's radar following his impressive performance in the Europa League quarter-final last season, but United are not expected to sign him this summer, report the Manchester Evening News .

Dendoncker scored a late equaliser in the first-leg against United , with Mourinho actively seeking out the Belgian international when the final whistle sounded at Old Trafford in the return leg.

And, having scouted Dendoncker at length, MEN Sport understands that United made an enquiry earlier this summer and touched base with his representatives.

United are one of a number of clubs 'following' Dendoncker's progress but, after the signing of Nemanja Matic , sources close to the player believe a deal will not happen this summer.

Anderlecht value the 6ft 2in powerhouse somewhere between £22m and £31m.

Dendoncker has been at Anderlecht at the age of 14 and, with the Belgian season just underway, is carefully considering his next move.

The 22-year-old played every minute of Anderlecht's title-winning campaign and Europa League run last season.

Although he has made his name as a holding midfielder, Dendoncker is not a traditional anchorman and likes to break into the opposition penalty area.

The Belgium international regularly topped Anderlecht's charts for distance covered last season - recording a personal best of 13km at one point.

Dendoncker has made 126 appearances for the Belgian giants' first team since making his debut as a teenager in 2014.
