Paul Clement are set to fiercely test Stoke’s determination to keep Joe Allen.
The Swansea boss has had an enquiry dismissed for the 27-year-old Wales midfielder with Gylfi Sigurdsson set for his £50million move to Everton.
The Swans lost Allen to Liverpool in 2012 and failed in an attempt to re-sign him before he joined Stoke last summer for £13million.
But Allen is now one of three players being sought by Clement with the Sigurdsson cash.
Swansea have already had a £10million bid for Manchester City’s Wilfried Bony rejected.
They are also keen on West Brom’s Nacer Chadli and are ready to follow up their enquiry for Allen with a £20million bid.
Stoke maintain Allen is not for sale following the defection of £25million striker Marko Arnautovic to West Ham.
Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes said: “Swansea did inquire but we told them quite firmly we are not interested in any kind of sale.
“They made an enquiry, they're a decent club, we told them we aren't interested and that should be the end of the matter.
“Joe had a good season and we're hoping he will have an even better season this time.”
Stoke manager Hughes also warned Swansea that Allen is not for sale in his pre-match press conference.
Hughes said: “There was a tentative enquiry, and that was it.
"We rebuffed that and didn’t give it any encouragement whatsoever.”
