Announcing a new signing in a creative manner is all the rage these days .

Clubs like to build up the tension around new arrivals, before attempting to "shock" you with the big reveal of just who it is.

It seems like a very modern thing, but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was shocking people with new signings 16 years ago, before the days of Twitter and Facebook, and claims that he pulled the wool over the press's eyes when he snapped up Sol Campbell on a free transfer from rivals Tottenham in 2001.

With no news about the transfer leaking out, journalists headed to Arsenal's training ground in the belief they were there to hear from goalkeeper Richard Wright (remember when he was nailed on to be England's No. 1?), who had joined the Gunners from Ipswich for £2m.

But they were then shocked to see Campbell walk in.

“We had an agreement that never came out,” Wenger told the Arsenal website . “I remember his press conference, when I said we will announce a player. Nobody turned up. It was here at the training ground.

“There were only two press people here. I will never forget the press’ faces when Sol came in. ‘Sol Campbell from Tottenham’, they couldn’t believe it!"

Campbell would go on to be a key figure for the Gunners, winning two Premier League titles, however, Daily Mirror Chief Football Writer John Cross remembers the story a little differently to Wenger.

"There were definitely more than two journalists there," said Cross. "I think pretty much everyone sent someone down there.

"It is probably true that they went for the Richard Wright deal, but I think Wenger is putting a bit of gravy on it to be fair.

"It is true that it was a shock, because it was a huge deal. Most people had thought Sol was going to Barcelona or Inter Milan."

Whatever Wenger's recollections, he can still claim to have pulled the wool over people's eyes.

And all without the need of a fake WhatsApp group, or a clever tweet, or a mysterious video...
