Many people claim it's a prime example of the transfer market going mad.

In the eyes of many fans, Everton's pursuit of Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson perfectly illustrates the absurd, inflated nature of the transfer fees being bandied around this summer.

After all, Everton agreeing a club record £45million for a player at a team who were nearly relegated last season - that's a crazy amount of money… right?

Wrong, actually.

As the stats below clearly prove, Sigurdsson has been one of the Premier League's leading playmakers for several seasons now.

In fact, once you see some of these numbers - and once you consider how much Premier League clubs are currently paying for certain other players - you will no doubt agree that Sigurdsson could be a £45miilion bargain…

Over the course of the last three Premier League seasons, only four players have racked up more assists than Sigurdsson

Here's the top five Premier League assisters since August 2014:

Cesc Fabregas (37), Mesut Ozil (33), Christian Eriksen (32), Kevin De Bruyne (27)… and Sigurdsson (26).

Not bad for a guy playing for Swansea.

Since he made his Premier League debut (2011), Gylfi Sigurdsson has scored more free-kick goals than any other player

The Icelandic international has scored SEVEN goals from direct free-kicks in that period - one more than Robert Snodgrass, Eriksen and Juan Mata (all on six).

The fact Sigurdsson ran across a grand total of 433 kilometres during matches last season might not mean much on its own.

It means an awful lot more when you learn that no other player - in any position or at any club - ran further.

Sigurdsson scored a remrkable five goals against the division's top sides last season.

Only Jamie Vardy (with six) bagged more against the best teams in the land.

Eight assists from set-pieces in one campaign?

Positively Beckham-esque.

Sigurdsson was involved in 48.9% of Swansea's goals last season

That means he either scored or set up nearly half of the Swans' goals.

Only Jermain Defoe at Sunderland (58.6%) and Romelu Lukaku at Everton (50%) were involved in more for their side.

Sigurdsson is both Swansea’s leading scorer (34) and assister (29) in Premier League history

All of which means, with fees currently sky high across the market, could anyone REALLY complain about having to pay £45million for Sigurdsson?
