Michael Owen truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

Much like Garth Crooks or Paul Merson, the European Footballer of the Year for 2001 is one of those pundits who often comes up with statements so bizarre/ridiculous/infuriating that they end up becoming strangely - and inadvertently - entertaining.

Take, for example, Owen's latest pearl of wisdom, about Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Despite featuring regularly at full-back for Liverpool this season, the general consensus is that Gomez will end up playing at centre-back in the long run.

However, little Micky Owen has his doubts. In his capacity as a BT Sport pundit, this was what the former Liverpool striker had to say about the young English defender after the 2-2 draw with Sevilla:

"I'm not sure Joe Gomez is tall enough to be a centre-back."

That doesn't sound TOO outrageous… until you remember that Joe Gomez is actually 6ft 2ins tall.

Which is:

a) something Owen should probably have known before he started talking about Gomez's height

and b) something that has provoked an entirely predictable response on Twitter:

FYI, if you're a big fan of Mr Owen, please ensure you vote in our massive poll of pundits.

He could REALLY do with some love…
