Manchester United

Confirmed: Man Utd’s Champions League opponents

The draw for this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage has just taken place.

Manchester United were drawn from pot 2 and will face Benfica, FC Basel and CSKA Moscow in this season’s group stage.

We entered in pot 2 for winning last season’s Europa League, whilst Chelsea went into pot 1 as the Premier League champions.  Manchester City joined us in pot 2 whilst Tottenham Hotspur were drawn from pot 3.

Benfica came from pot 1 and were arguably the weakest possible for us – an excellent draw from our point of view.  The Portuguese champions are coached by Rui Vitoria and have the likes of Luisao, Jonas, Raul Jimenez, Eduardo Salvio, Andre Almeida, Ljubomir Fejsa and Fulham flop Konstantinos Mitroglou, on their books.

Pot 3 saw us drawn against FC Basel.  The Swiss champions have won three of their opening five games to start their domestic season.

Our final opponents are last season’s Russian Premier League runners-up, CSKA Moscow.  Igor Akinfeev, Alan Dzagoev, Pontus Wernbloom, Aleksei Berezutski and Vasili Berezutski are some names you may recognise.

All eight groups have been confirmed as:

Group A: Benfica, Manchester United, FC Basel, CSKA Moscow
Group B: Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Anderlecht, Celtic
Group C: Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Qarabag
Group D: Juventus, Barcelona, Olympiacos, Sporting CP
Group E: Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, Liverpool, Maribor
Group F: Shakhtar Donetsk, Manchester City, Napoli, Feyenoord
Group G: Monaco, FC Porto, Besiktas, RB Leipzig
Group  H: Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham, Apoel
