Could Luke Shaw face former club on Saturday?

Manchester United travel to Southampton tomorrow in one of Saturday’s 3pm kickoffs.

Left-back Luke Shaw is in contention to play having made his first appearance in nearly five months midweek as he came off the bench to play 45 minutes in our 4-1 EFL Cup victory over Burton Albion.

The 22-year-old had been out since picking up an ankle injury versus Swansea City on 30 April.

Shaw was given the whole of the second half versus the Championship strugglers after we went into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead at Old Trafford.

However, question marks were raised about the England international post-game as he often looked conservative on his return.

Ander Herrera put in an example of a performance that Shaw should have looked up to.  The Spaniard worked his socks off from start to finish hoping to impress Jose Mourinho as he looks to get back involved in our Premier League fixtures during Paul Pogba’s absence.

Shaw should have been looking to do the same, and although he will have saved energy for this weekend’s game by not busting his gut at every opportunity, I don’t see him being given a chance to play at St Mary’s on Saturday as a result.

The youngster arrived in a £30+ million deal back in 2014 but has only played in 32 of a possible 119 Premier League matches for Manchester United for various reasons – mostly injury, but also because Mourinho has not been impressed by his attitude.

Both Ashley Young and Daley Blind have been playing at left-back in recent weeks, and with the Dutch international starting versus Burton on Wednesday night, I think it will be Ashley Young starting his second consecutive Premier League game in this position tomorrow.

Luke Shaw is unlikely to even be named among the substitutes as we have Blind, Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof competing with him for two places on the bench.
