Could this 20-year-old start for Man Utd against CSKA?

Manchester United are in the Russian capital on Wednesday night as we take on CSKA Moscow in our second group stage game of this season’s Champions League.

Both teams are on three points after our opening game and a win in this game would make a huge statement towards reaching the second round.

Heading to Russia, Paul Pogba is still sidelined with the hamstring injury he picked up in our opening game in this season’s competition, versus FC Basel a fortnight ago.

On top of Pogba’s absence in the middle of the park, Marouane Fellaini has not travelled to Moscow. The Belgian suffered a knock following a challenge from Shane Long in our 1-0 win at Southampton on Saturday.

Michael Carrick was also absent in yesterday’s photos of United boarding the flight to Russia.

As a result, Jose Mourinho has only taken three central midfielders out to Eastern Europe with him – Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and 20-year-old Scott McTominay.

Whilst Matic and Herrera are widely-expected to start in a 4-2-3-1 formation, there is a good chance McTominay could make his Champions League debut from the substitutes bench.

Scott McTominay made his Premier League debut in our final game of last season versus Crystal Palace back in May. He then came off the bench in our 4-1 thrashing of Burton Albion in the EFL Cup last week.

He is a box-to-box midfielder who has impressed for our reserves for more than a year now.  He stands at 6’4″ making him a useful backup to Fellaini.
