Everton to issue ban to supporter who aimed punch at Lyon player

Everton have confirmed they have identified the supporter who aimed a punch at a Lyon player and will ban him from future fixtures.

The club will also make a formal complaint to the police, who have already launched an investigation into the incident during Thursday’s Europa League tie.

The incident happened midway through the second half and was sparked by Ashley Williams’ crude shove on Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Players from both sides then clashed in the ensuing melee, which spilled over onto the advertising hoardings at the side of the pitch by the Gwladys street end.

An Everton fan, still holding his young child, was then seen to be aiming a punch or slap towards Lopes.

Everton have since reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and identified the supporter involved.

A statement read:

“Club Officials have reviewed the footage of an incident that occurred in the 64th minute of the game against Olympique Lyonnais where supporters towards the front of the lower Gwladys Street End became involved in a confrontation between players.

We have identified one individual whom action will now be taken against. This will include a ban from attending future Everton fixtures and the Club registering a formal complaint with Merseyside Police.”

Merseyside Police also released a statement on Friday morning, saying:

"Merseyside Police can confirm officers are investigating following a disturbance on the pitch during a football match between Everton and Lyon at Goodison Park last night, Thursday 19 October.

"Detectives will be reviewing footage and speaking to witnesses to establish what, if any, offences have been committed.

"Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A UEFA charge is surely to follow, with Everton likely to be hit for failing to control their fans AND their players. Lyon are also likely to receive some disciplinary action for their role in the brawl.

Williams may also receive further punishment for his role in the incident, that saw him receive only a yellow card from the referee.

Speaking after the game Lyon ‘keeper Lopes was quick to play down the incident saying:

"It was no big deal, it happened and that was it. For me it seemed to wake up the fans and they seemed to love it.

"I don't think it is part of the English atmosphere to hit an away player, but it was like this. But I am proud that we were strong at 1-1 we won the game despite everything.

"It was a very proud night for us."
