Lineups:

Everton

Starting XI - Pickford; Kenny, Jagielka, Keane, Martina; Schneiderlin, Gueye, Davies; Lennon, Calvert-Lewin, Sigurdsson.

Subs: Robles, Williams, Bolasie, Ramirez, Niasse, Holgate, Baningime.

Chelsea

Starting XI - Courtois; Azpilicueta (c), Christensen, Rudiger; Moses, Kante, Bakayoko, Alonso; Willian, Hazard, Pedro.

Subs: Caballero, Cahill, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Fabregas, Hudson-Odoi, Batshuayi.

Final Verdict:

Sam Allardyce has Everton playing with such defensive structure that as fans we have no idea what’s going on here. This is unlike anything we’ve seen in years. Following the adage of building a team from the back, under Big Sam the Blues are developing a kind of grit and toughness in the backline that bodes really well for the future.

A flu-depleted took on Chelsea at their best (minus Alvaro Morata, though), set out to frustrate the visitors, and managed to do exactly that with large parts of sheer grit interspersed with doses of luck.

It’s not pretty, but it’ll do for now.
