Everton wanted Daley Blind in the summer

Ronald Koeman identified the Manchester United man as a transfer target

You’re likely getting a bit tired of hearing about how Everton failed to sign people in the summer.

The botched job of replacing Romelu Lukaku, and failing to convince Olivier Giroud to swap London for Liverpool is one that continues to haunt the club.

Elsewhere, the failure to get cover at centre back and left back have also caused problems abound, especially for Ronald Koeman.

Just like that striker situation, though, it appears Koeman and Steve Walsh did have a move lined up to fix that issue but it never came to fruition.

According to De Telegraaf in the Netherlands, Koeman was keen on bringing in Daley Blind from Manchester United.

A move obviously never materialised, with the Blues likely getting the cold shoulder from United given that Blind appeared to feature heavily in Jose Mourinho’s plans at the time.

He started regularly across pre-season and started the first three league games, although he is yet to make an appearance since then.

Indeed, a move in January would make a lot of sense for Everton. Blind is out of contract in the summer, unless Manchester United exercise a one-year contract option, and selling would make sense.

Everton still need cover at both left back and centre back and Blind would fill that hole nicely. In fact, he’d arguably be their best player in both positions should he arrive.

Expect links to be revived throughout the January transfer window, especially with Sam Allardyce admitting Everton will be active throughout the month.

Sam Allardyce against Liverpool

Sam Allardyce takes Everton to Anfield on Sunday for the first Merseyside derby this season and will be keen to improve his career record against Liverpool.
