Former Everton and Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has gotten himself in a spot of bother previously after being inebriated, and repeated that after a preseason friendly this weekend as well.

Speaking to Sunderland fans after a five-goal thrashing at the hands of Scottish champions Celtic just days before the start of the Championship season, Gibson mouthed off questioning some of his teammates’ commitment to the Black Cats before insisting that he definitely wanted to do well for the club.

Gibson has previously fallen foul of the authorities following a drunk driving incident in August 2015 that resulted in his driver’s license being suspended for two years, a term that incidentally ends in a month.

Gibson was transferred along with Bryan Oviedo to Sunderland from Everton this January as Ronald Koeman cleaned house, but failed to save the club from relegation to the Championship.

He was filmed drinking in a local pub and spoke to Sunderland fans while quite clearly drunk -

“We’re s---…. Of course I’m bothered, I don’t want to be s---…There are too many people at the club who don’t give a f---. You tell me who doesn’t want to be at the club?”

Goaded on by the fans, he went on to agree that the club’s foreign purchases haven’t acquitted themselves well. Gibson then was asked why he was out drinking after such a thrashing, and he responded -

“Right, I’m off my face in here, but I still want to play for Sunderland, the rest of them don’t though…”

New manager Simon Grayson will likely be quite displeased by the behavior of one his veterans, and although he may agree with Gibson’s sentiments in private, he will have to act against such behavior to prevent a fan revolt.
