Man of the Match and Player Grades Poll for Everton at Manchester City

Everton will be relieved to take home a point, but at the same time unhappy that a chance at all three was thrown away after a stellar defensive effort in a 1-1 draw away at Manchester City.

Ronald Koeman started off with Sandro Ramirez not even on the teamsheet for the day, evidently not having recovered from his heel injury. Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson were also on the bench as fans prepared for a bunkering-down performance.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin looked very good ploughing a lone furrow up top, giving the slow-footed City backline fits with his eye for open space and his running.

The home side put the Blues under plenty of pressure, with a particularly good spell resulting in David Silva’s shot coming off the post with Jordan Pickford beaten. However, almost immediately after, Calvert-Lewin capped off a fine solo display upfront by beating a couple of men and finding the wide open Wayne Rooney in the box to slot home.

Just before the half Kyle Walker went into a red mist and picked up two quick bookings and got himself sent off to the dismay of the home crowd, putting City under even more pressure.

With an hour gone, Sigurdsson made his first Everton appearance, coming on for Tom Davies while Ashley Williams came off as well, with Klaassen coming on and Everton reverting to a back four.

City made light of being a man down as they continued to control possession while Everton grew in stature in the second half immediately after the substitutions.

Roared on by the partisan crowd though, the home team continued to create chances as Everton settled in to protect their lead. The pressure eventually told though, with an unmarked Raheem Sterling thumping home a loose ball to tie it up.

The Blues saw Morgan Schneiderlin sent off late for a second booking which Koeman will like to contest considering he got the ball first. Everton somehow held on after that though to take away the point.
