Potential Everton departures on Transfer Deadline Day

While most fans will be glued to their television screens watching the Transfer Deadline Day looking to see who will be coming to Everton, there are a few players who could be departing the club looking for playing opportunities too.

There was a bit of a cull going on in January as players who didn’t buy in to Ronald Koeman’s philosophy were shown the door either on loan or permanently. As Gerard Deulofeu and Tom Cleverley will attest, there is no coming back once the gaffer has given up on you.

Here are some players who could be on the move today as the transfer window comes to a close this evening.

Ross Barkley

Once he refused to sign a lucrative new deal his career at Everton was basically over. While he seemed to be training with full involvement in the preseason, he’s basically biding his time as Everton look to maximize a return on the player.

His hamstring injury and subsequent surgery that will keep him out till December comes at a most inopportune time. In a World Cup year, his only chance of making Gareth Southgate’s squad is playing regularly, whether it’s at Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea or even at Everton.

Kevin Mirallas

Another player on the fringes of his national side, Mirallas needs to play regularly to break into an uber-talented Belgium team. It appears he’s had a falling out over playing time with Koeman, but the thin squad and his skillset mean he’ll see the pitch sooner or later.

Olympiakos have been knocking on the door for a loan, and considering they play in the Champions League this would give him a bigger stage to show off his abilities, but it’s unlikely Everton let him go without a like-for-like replacement coming in today.

Aaron Lennon

The club stood by the winger as he struggled with his illness last season, but he looks to be back and happy to play whatever role he can get. There has been some interest in Lennon from various smaller clubs but once again, Everton are unlikely to sell him unless there’s a starting calibre winger lined up.

Oumar Niasse

Poor Niasse is all we can say. He has been treated somewhat harshly by Koeman who has handled him like a pariah from the previous regime. Throughout his ordeal at Everton the striker has kept his hopes up and done whatever was asked of him, including training with the Under-23s and not even being granted a locker.

There’s been links with a couple of Premier League sides as well as Turkish interest, so let’s see what happens today. There is also a minute but bizarro possibility that he becomes the Blues’ striker for the season if Everton fail to bring anyone in!

James McCarthy

A player who has been linked with departure from Goodison Park at just about every transfer window, McCarthy is for some reason held in high regard by Koeman despite his injury woes.

Transfer chatter around the Irish international has quietened down, and with Gareth Barry leaving it’s unlikely the Toffees let him go too, but McCarthy might find himself a pawn if the Blues are in a position to make a bigger move.

Joel Robles

After not only losing his starting spot last season thanks to a couple of completely boneheaded mistakes, Joel is not even the back up behind Jordan Pickford either. He’s going to have a hard time convincing Koeman to change his mind over that.

The Spaniard has been linked to about half a dozen clubs including some in the La Liga, but with Koeman wanting three starting level goalies on the squad, the netminder might have to bide his time on the bench for the rest of the season when his contract expires.
