Everton will return for veteran defender in January

Portuguese outlet A Bola confirmed today that Everton had made an attempt to sign Porto captain Ivan Marcano late on deadline day, with the Blues likely to return for the player during the January transfer window.

The article is not short on snark, though maybe something is lost/gained in translation from Portuguese -

In a last-minute move so typical of English football, Everton tried to reach Marcano in the final moments of the summer market, but the transfer eventually failed.

... At that time, the English club will be able to satisfy the pretensions of the former coach of Benfica and the scenario even suggests a more favorable conjecture.

The 30-year-old defender has made his way around Europe previous to his stint at Porto, but would bring nothing to Everton really. He doesn’t use his relatively decent size well against physical strikers, often being shoved off the ball easily while his lumbering nature lets quicker forwards past him. Marcano can be strong in the air, but is very often caught out of position and his vain attempts to jump are futile.

It would be odd indeed that the Toffees went back for Marcano when there is plenty of younger talent to be had at the position throughout England and Europe. Like we described in our previous story about the defender -
