Jagielka: We didn’t do ourselves any justice

Everton defended abysmally at Wembley yesterday to let hosts Tottenham Hotspur romp to a 4-0 win that could have easily been worse.

Speaking to evertontv after the game, captain Phil Jagielka rued the Blues losing their composure in the second half.

“We managed to get through the first half with them having long-range shots but then we haven’t defended well, unfortunately, and we’ve gone in 1-0 down.

“The first half wasn’t so bad. We were close to going ahead with an offside goal from Wayne. We limited them to few chances but second half, going 2-0 down, we shot ourselves in the foot. They stepped up a gear and deservedly ran out comfortable winners.

“We tried to keep it tight but the last thing you want to be doing is chasing a 2-0 deficit against a team like Spurs and they put us to the sword.

“We’ve had some difficult games, it’s a long, tough period but we’ll look at the video tomorrow, move on and try to pick up points in the next games.

“It was always going to be a big game. Today was going to be difficult. We didn’t do ourselves any justice so we need to dust ourselves down and look forward to the game against West Brom.

“The confidence hasn’t been too badly dented. Today won’t be great but we know we’ve got a good run of games. They will be tough but we know we can pick up some points.”

New signing Cenk Tosun made his Everton debut, looking busy and getting after the ball whenever he could.

“He’s only been here a few days but there were bits and bobs tonight – his first touch and hold-up play was great.

“He didn’t last the full 90 minutes but hopefully next weekend he can play well and get a goal. He and Wayne are two very clever players and hopefully they can create and score many goals for us.”
