Following a loss to Costa Rica on Friday, the United States men’s national team is in a sticky situation in World Cup qualifying. It’s in third place and level on points with Honduras — only ahead on goal differential. The Americans head into Tuesday night’s game in San Pedro Sula knowing they must avoid a loss.
Honduras has bounced back from the 6-0 defeat it suffered at the hands of the Americans and now has a good chance to qualify for the World Cup. Those chances will go up considerably in the event of a revenge victory over the Americans. A draw would still leave the USMNT in control of its own World Cup qualification destiny.
The United States is without Jozy Altidore, who is suspended for yellow card accumulation. John Brooks and DeAndre Yedlin are the most notable players who did not make the squad due to injury. Honduras is also missing a player due to suspension following Emilio Izaguirre’s red card against Trinidad and Tobago. Los Catrachos also left a few famous players off its squad, most notably Andy Najar and Roger Espinoza.
