Blackburn 0-2 Burnley: Clarets advance to third round

Burnley players were confronted on the pitch by a Blackburn fan as Sean Dyche's side won a fourth consecutive East Lancashire derby to advance into the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

The respective current fortunes of the fierce rivals, whose grounds are separated by less than 15 miles, were fully reflected in what played out at Ewood Park. Jack Cork headed in the opener for Burnley after 27 minutes and Robbie Brady wrapped up a 2-0 win in first-half added time.

There was a huge police presence in and around the stadium, with police lining the streets in the build-up to kick-off, but neither officers nor stewards prevented two home supporters running onto the pitch after Cork's goal.

One ran straight to the visiting players as they made their way back to the centre circle and appeared to push captain James Tarkowski before being tackled to the ground by Ashley Westwood.

The supporter was eventually led away by stewards along with the other fan, while a Burnley supporter was also ejected after a flare was set off in the away end.

The atmosphere had been lively from the start but increasingly it was only the Burnley fans who had anything to cheer. It is seven years and as many matches since Blackburn last won a derby, during which time they have suffered two relegations while Burnley are playing in the Premier League for the third season out of four.

Rovers at least broke their League One duck at the weekend with victory over Bradford but Tony Mowbray found his options for this match limited by injuries and gave first starts to Harry Chapman, Marcus Antonsson and Ben Gladwin.

Burnley's record signing Chris Wood was named on the bench two days after his move from Leeds in a deal that could be worth £17m. He was on before half-time after Jonathan Walters, making his first start, was forced off in the 43rd minute having needed lengthy treatment following an early tackle.

Blackburn hustled their opponents early on but, once Burnley began to take control, they never relinquished it.

After David Raya pushed behind an Ashley Barnes shot from the edge of the area, he was left helpless as an unmarked Cork headed in Brady's cross. It was Cork's first goal since he re-signed for the club this summer, and the chances kept coming for the visitors.

Barnes, Scott Arfield and Brady all came close while Wood should have scored moments after coming on but was denied by Raya when clean through.

There was still time for Burnley to grab their second, though, with the excellent Brady shooting into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Rovers struggled to make any headway in the second half until the final stages, although a goal was needlessly chalked off when Dominic Samuel, standing in an offside position, touched in Craig Conway's shot.
