CSKA Moscow v Man Utd preview: Ander Herrera set to start for visitors

Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera is set to start for Manchester United when they visit CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United, who opened their Group A campaign with a 3-0 home win over Basel, will be without Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba due to injury.

It provides an opportunity for Spanish midfielder Herrera, who has started just two games in all competitions so far this season.

"We don't have Fellaini, we don't have Pogba, we don't have Carrick. So all three midfield players we lose for this match. The solutions are not many," Jose Mourinho told a news conference on Tuesday.

"We try not to focus on individual battles or specific areas on the pitch. We try to focus on the bigger picture. And we are going to have a team with quality, with balance."

CSKA Moscow lie fourth in the Russian Premier League with six wins from 11 games but Mourinho believes they are "the best CSKA I am going to play against".

"I don't like to speak about opponents," he said. "If I speak good, I motivate them. If I speak bad, I motivate them."

Manchester United have left for their Champions League game against CSKA Moscow without Marouane Fellaini

Team news

Belgium international Fellaini was added to the absentee list after a Shane Long tackle in Saturday's 1-0 win over Southampton injured his ankle and, with Carrick also missing, Herrera is set to start.

Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are available again after serving European suspensions but the former will not feature.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo are long-term absentees, while Pogba is also absent due to his hamstring complaint.

CSKA will be without Aleksandr Makarov with an ankle injury and Mario Fernandes is expected to miss out after suffering a concussion against Dinamo Moscow on Saturday.

Match stats

CSKA Moscow are winless in their four previous games against Manchester Utd (D2 L2), all in the Champions League group stages (2009/10, 2015/16).

Among all victors on matchday one of this season's Champions League, CSKA registered the lowest possession (27 per cent v Benfica).

CSKA have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 29 Champions League games, their last shut-out coming in November 2011 against Trabzonspor (0-0). In fact, Igor Akinfeev has failed to keep a clean sheet in his last 40 games (excluding qualifiers), the longest ever run for a goalkeeper in the competition.

Watch highlights from Man Utd's win at Southampton

Manchester Utd have reached the knockout stages in 16 of their previous 20 Champions League appearances; however they haven't made it past the group stages since 2013/14.

Manchester Utd have won only one of their last 10 Champions League away games (D4 L5), it was against Bayer Leverkusen in November 2013 (5-0).

Charlie predicts

I do still think you can get at United and I think Mourinho might make two or three changes to give them a bit more control.

The Premier League table suggests they've been strolling along more comfortably than they have and the late goals have flattered them somewhat.

I think CSKA will be very aggressive and, while United can look after themselves, it will unsettle their rhythm and it might take a while for them to get going, especially without Pogba or Fellaini.

Charlie predicts: 1-1 and Bebars Natcho to score first (66/1 with Sky Bet)

Betting

Manchester United are Sky Bet's 4/6 favourites for the victory with CSKA priced at 9/2 despite home advantage, while the draw is a 13/5 chance. Jose Mourinho's men are even shorter odds at 1/5 to win Group A and are 11/1 fifth favourites in the Champions League outright. Romelu Lukaku heads the first goalscorer betting at 11/4 with Vitinho considered the hosts' main threat at 7/1 to net first.
